Home-Start North West Leicestershire is a voluntary organisation started in 1983 and is part of a national network of Home-Start schemes. Home-Start trains and supports volunteers to offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families with a child under five, in their own homes. Home-Start is primarily a home visiting scheme that aims to work in partnership with the families providing encouragement and help in time of difficulties
All Home-Start schemes are registered charities that have a common constitution and policy and practice guides to provide a coherent structure. Each scheme is managed by a board made up of local representatives from individuals with specialist skills, one or two volunteers from the scheme and representatives from local voluntary and statutory organisations. The board is responsible for funding, insurance, premises and the employment of staff.
The Home-Start approach depends on the organisation's independence from statutory services whilst working in close partnership with them for the benefit of the family.
Home-Start North West Leicestershire is financially supported by grants from The Big Lottery and North West Leicestershire District Council. Leicestershire County Council was for many years the most significant source of grant funding for the scheme but the county is now moving towards a county wide tendering process and has already declared its intention not to fund a home visiting service. Individual donations and fundraising are becoming increasingly important to ensure the future of Home-Start.
Home-Start North West Leicestershire is a charity registered with the Charity Commission, Registration Number 1107741.
